REVIEW: Dancing Queen (Netflix)

Tongue popping diva and fierce Texas queen, ALYSSA EDWARDS, shares both sides of her world in the brand new NETFLIX docuseries, DANCING QUEEN.

RUPAUL’s DRAG RACE fans will recognize ALYSSA EDWARDS, real name JUSTIN JOHNSON from Season 5 of Drag Race and Season 2 of RUPAUL’s DRAG RACE: ALL STARS.

While Alyssa may have not snatched the crown in either season of Drag Race, her dance company BEYOND BELIEF DANCE COMPANY has been snatching trophies in the dance world for some time.

DANCING QUEEN, focuses on both sides of Alyssa/Justin’s life.

As for Justin’s side it’s dating, becoming a homeowner, dealing with dance moms, the dancers and the trials and tribulations of dancing competitions and mending his broken but loving family back together.

For Alyssa’s side, it focuses on her finding the courage to build her one woman show and recording her first single.

Unlike the reality show DANCE MOMS, the moms in DANCING QUEEN are quite likable and while yes, they are “intense dance moms” and very passionate about their own dancing divas, you see the love and respect they have for Justin. He is not just a coach or teacher, he is their friend and chosen family. They even help him move into his new home, something Justin said his real family would not even lift a finger for.

The dancers featured range from sassy little divas to shy but determined dancers and those leaving the dancing nest to test the waters out in the real world. Their passion for dance and their dedication to their dream is quite inspiring for any age watching the show. Their desire to impress and win for Justin and the Company is also in their hearts to impress and win for themselves.

Drag queens and drag race fans, like myself, will love how the series melds both sides of Alyssa/Justin’s life. Her dance company knows Alyssa and her drag family and friends know Justin and his passion.

Both worlds are supportive, loving, and there and that is what makes the series zing.

Yes, there is drama and tears, but more often than not, you find yourself smiling and just being inspired.

In the words of Justin, “You manage your blessings.”

And it was a blessing in this fucked up world to just smile and root for people to achieve their dreams.

DANCING QUEEN is a must watch for Drag Race fans and dance fans but more importantly if you just need to smile, absolutely watch DANCING QUEEN.

And if nothing else, you’ll learn how to pop your tongue and be fierce every day!

Watch DANCING QUEEN now.
